50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EVENT

Since 1975, Great Harwood Rovers have been providing grassroots football participation for their local community, and decided to put on an event to celebrate this special milestone. All teams, showcase style football, and sporting activities were held at their home ground, the Townfield Mobility Arena, on Thursday 5th September.

There were lots of fun filled events to take part in, including a football game, penalty shoot out and a Kickboxing Challenge, which were all arranged by the teams to raise money for club funds. Each current team had a professional photo taken, and food and drink were available for a big celebration.

Their local MP was in attendance, to officially open the event and help the teams celebrate. Sarah Smith, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, said: “This is an incredible facility and it’s amazing to see it being so well used. Congratulations on your 50th anniversary and a huge well done to all of the amazing volunteers that keep this place running. Thank you very much!”

John Timmins of sponsors Townfield Care, commented: “It’s fantastic to see Great Harwood Rovers celebrate 50 years of grassroots football. We’ve now seen numerous generations go through their ranks, and I’m sure all of them say what a fantastic place it is to come and play and train.”

Nigel Sutton, Chairman of Great Harwood Rovers said, “We can’t believe as a club that 50 years later we’re in the fantastic facilities we’re in, and our teams are popular as ever. We’ve supported thousands of children over the years and given them the opportunity to play football with us, and hope to carry on for many years for the benefit of our community!”

About Us

Great Harwood Rovers are an FA Charter Standard Community Club, based at the Townfield Mobility Arena in East Lancashire.  A local club run by local volunteers for our local children, GHR FC is proud to be part of the Great Harwood Community.

Founded in 1975, the club now comprises of 27 teams for girls and boys ranging in age from Under 7s to Under 18s and an Adult Ladies team.  The Mini League also provides a great introduction to football for kids aged 4 to 6 years old.

The club is represented in various local Saturday and Sunday leagues, with team training sessions taking place on a midweek night.  GHR FC is managed and run by around 70 volunteers from the local area.  In any given week they collectively put in over 700 hours effort into running their teams and the Club in general.  The hard work and commitment of both managers on the pitch and also the committee behind the scenes is relentless and as a club we are constantly looking to welcome any new volunteers.

The Club is funded mainly from player subscriptions, but is also very grateful for the support of dozens of local businesses and the Football Foundation.
